This project arose as part of conservation work to the pond at the Pineapple, near Falkirk. A funding stipulation required that we create new interpretation telling the public about the importance of this site as a habitat for Great Crested Newts.
We worked with the local primary school to develop interpretation that used children’s drawings and photographs of their visits to the site. The children conducted a review of the visitor journey, learned about the wildlife there with the ranger team, and held their own launch event when the new panel was unveiled.
The children had some other great ideas for interpretation at the site including a colourful newt’s foot and a pineapple to brighten up the entrance. It was clear that their favourite part of any of the visits had been rolling down the hill so we made sure that was one of the to-dos for visitors!
