Milngavie Reservoirs

This new suite of visitor signage and interpretive panels opened to the public in 2024. I led this project from early planning stages through to delivery, working in collaboration with Tea and Type design. We later brought in illustrator Tom Holmes to produce a family-friendly illustrated map of the site, featuring key wildlife species, built features and more.

Example of signage. We kept this minimal, and developed a variation of the brand that was less corporate than the usual SW blue.

As well as rethinking the visitor journey for this popular attraction (from threshold signage through to behavioural messaging) I’ve been supporting SW with a wider rethink as to how it presents its sites to the public. The project was completed through lockdown and featured numerous steps and stages of internal and external consultation.

The results will effectively now set the standard for future interpretation via new guidelines for the organisation. In the early stages I wrote a visitor experience plan for the Reservoirs working with community group Friends of Milngavie Reservoirs. I later developed a brief for market research by Turquoise Thinking, the results of which shaped our work. I also supported my client and led the design team throughout the process for applying for listed building consent.

Example of family-friendly species interpretation. These small panels created a mini-trail.
Map by Tom Holmes, developed in partnership with Friends of Milngavie and SW ecologists.
