Grey Mare’s Tail has to be one of my favourite NTS properties. The way the landscape unfolds to reveal the tranquility of Loch Skeen really is something everyone should experience at least once.
The brief for this project was to develop external interpretation at the site that would replace an unsightly existing visitor centre. The new mobile trailer can be taken off-site to promote the nature reserve. There was also a requirement for an AV element so visitors could look at a peregrine falcon’s nest through an existing CCTV link.
Jo wrote and collated all the content with advice from specialist staff.
The works we delivered included:
A welcome panel – with new illustration showing the extent of the reserve and highlighting points of interest.
A trail leaflet – pointing out sites of interest along the way from the Giant’s grave (an archaeological site), to the rare plants and moths.
Interpretive Stell – a drystane stell (mimicking the historic sheepfolds of the area) with interpretation panels embedded with in it. We positioned the panels so the stories related to relevant features in whichever direction you were looking in.
An exhibition trailer – this is visually striking while also fitting in seamlessly to the landscape.
