A new light on Livingstone

This exhibition formed part of celebrations marking the bi-centenary of Scotland’s most famous explorer- David Livingstone.

The content was very challenging. It combined quite complex comtemporary scientific approaches with the emotionally charged subject of the slave trade. On the one hand we had David Livingstone witnessing some shocking events and using whatever tools he could find (old newspapers, and local berries as ink which faded over time) to record them. On the other we had academics today using digital imaging technology to unlock these lost writings.

We included a code breaking interactive which allows visitors to write and reveal their own hidden messages using UV light, and our expert in the States helped us put together an AV presentation to share his personal perspective. His passion for the subject really shone through when he spoke and this seemed important to capture.

Jo was always keen that since the theme was about David Livingstone’s writing that his handwriting should play a part and be highly visible within the exhibition. She sourced suitable short, powerful quotes from his diaries and through her design work, Shirley did a great job of artworking the handwriting to be legible without losing it’s character.

With the help and expertise of the fabulous team at the David Livingstone Centre and specialist advisor, Adrian Wisnicki coupled with the amazing can- do creative approach of Shirley at Tea & Type design we delivered great results against the clock, and within a tight budget. The exhibition was ready in time for all the programmed events, and was even featured on the news!
