A multimedia tour for Culzean Castle was the response to the challenge of how we could enhance the visitor experience without impacting on the way the rooms were currently presented.
The ability to show contextual footage, images and audio was a great opportunity and I think, and feedback suggests the tour is an excellent visitor experience.
I wrote the brief and was the main client contact for ATS Heritage who produced all the content and AV elements. I did a huge amount of research and content checking as part of this project including doctoring Adam’s plans to create a visual of the castle over time. With 1.5 hours of content this was a lot of work!
Positives of this project
- People don’t need to take this guide- it is a positive choice. They can still experience the rooms as they are if that is their favoured learning style.
- Shows footage of Eisenhower on site, and interviews with people who met him. Note: as part of the wider project we had removed an outdated exhibition about Eisenhower so this seemed like suitable compensatory experience.
- Lets people hear inside the barrel organ, and music box
- Gives access inside objects you wouldn’t normally see – douglas heart cabinet
- Interviews with staff experts who you wouldn’t normally meet talking about their work
- Choices of what to find out about in each room i.e. fun /game sections for families
- Way of introducing live interpretation without requiring staff resource – see people eating in the dining room
